Farm Credit Services launches 2009 scholarship program
Louisville, Ky. – October 31, 2008 – Farm Credit Services of Mid-America – a $16 billion agriculture lending cooperative serving farmers and rural America with offices in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee - re-affirmed its commitment to educational success by making $45,000 in scholarships available to children of members who are studying agriculture or business at four-year universities. Thirty six scholarships with values of $1,500 and $1,000 will be awarded for the 2009 school year based on academic record, leadership qualities, and community involvement. The member scholarship program is part of an overall education effort where FCS awards over $100,000 in scholarships to universities and organziations such as 4-H and FFA.
“We started this scholarship program a few years ago, awarding 18 scholarships,” said Matt Walther, chair of the board of Farm Credit Services from Centerville, Indiana. “Based on feedback from our customer-advisors and because we received so many quality applications last year, we doubled the number of scholarships which will be awarded in 2009. As agriculture continues to grow and evolve, we want students to be at the forefront of the industry, and grow with it.”
The scholarships will be awarded to students choosing to pursue careers in agriculture, financing or ag business and are part of the cooperative’s stewardship program which involves returning greater value to rural America by increasing the association’s investment in education and youth activities.
Available to members, their dependents and spouses of the ag lending cooperative, the deadline to apply is February 27, 2009. Scholarships will be awarded in May.
