FCS celebrates beef month in May

Louisville, Kentucky – April 27, 2009 - Hamburgers or Filets? It’s a question that many are asking as the weather warms and people begin firing up their grills. Perfect timing because May is National Beef Month!

This unique celebration, which began more than 40 years ago, honors those farmers who produce high quality and nutritious beef as well as those beef cattle associations who play a roll in building good will that brings public esteem and recognition to the industry that is so vital to our economy.

According to the latest agriculture census numbers, Kentucky has more than 43,000 beef-cow farms with more than 2.3 million head of cattle. Receipts from the sale of cattle and calves topped $896 million in 2007. “Clearly, the beef cattle industry is important to Kentucky, ranking (xx) largest among agriculture commodities in the state,” said (name) with Farm Credit Services of Mid-America in (location).” (last name) went on to say that over 14 percent of the Farm Credit’s total enterprise concentration – or roughly 15,000 customers – is in beef-cattle. “In Kentucky alone, we serve over 4,650 customers whose primary occupation is cattle farming.”

It seems fitting that during this month, Farm Credit is celebrating National Beef Month by inviting customers to stop by the closest office to register for a grill set. Also, visitors may go online to the organization’s website – www.e-farmcredit.com - starting in May to register for a chance to win in the “Apron a Day in May” contest. (Add additional information about what you are doing in your office locally).

“Join this great American tradition and help us celebrate beef month,” said (last name). “There’s no better way to let our local cattle producers know that are appreciated than by enjoying delicious beef products this spring.”
