Everybody eats. But very few Americans have a direct connection to where their food comes from. Just 11 percent of U.S. workers are employed in the agriculture and food industry. At Farm Credit Mid-America, we are dedicated to supporting the future of agriculture. One way we show our dedication is by making the hard work of farmers and others in the agricultural industry more visible to the people who benefit — which means all of us.

Families in need can’t always get fresh produce. Farmers often have surplus or unsellable food. Farms to Food Banks brings them together and highlights the important role farmers play in feeding us all. Farm Credit Mid-America is proud to support this effort. In 2016, employee volunteers from Farm Credit Mid-America packaged more than 42,000 pounds of produce and harvested nearly 20,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables in three months. The effort continues in 2017 with nearly 500 volunteers.

Global Impact STEM Academy, a public school in Springfield, Ohio, incorporates practical learning and agricultural science into every part of the curriculum. It is the first ag-focused STEM program (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in the state and one of just a few in the country. Although most students don’t come from farming backgrounds, Global Impact is exposing them to a vast and growing area of agricultural career opportunities they may not have known existed.

Seneca FFA isn’t your typical FFA chapter. It’s based in a high school in urban Louisville, Kentucky, and none of its members come from farming families. Yet Seneca FFA has grown to 60 members and regularly scoops up more community service awards than other chapters in its region. Farm Credit is proud to support Seneca FFA’s efforts to promote ag careers for urban youth.

Seeing is not only believing, as the saying goes, it is also understanding. That’s the principle behind the Virtual Pork Tours, a project of the Ohio Pork Council and Farm Credit Mid-America. Pork farmers use video conferencing technology to show school groups all over the country how pigs are raised and where bacon comes from.

Every year, Farm Credit helps national lawmakers and policy leaders start seeing ag — and farmers — for themselves. We bring young farmers to Washington, D.C., to tell their stories, share the contributions of the agriculture industry and discuss the importance of supporting young farmers in America at hosted lunches and discussions.
